Top 6 tips for dealing with mental health

Here are some tips from someone who has dealt with mental health issues in the past, and want to be able to deal with it now or help others. - By Megan M

1- Vent about it: Everyone has those days where they might be very stressed and they just need to let off steam, so you should talk about it. Better yet shout about it. To a family, friends, or anyone that will just listen. They don’t have to say anything or maybe they’ll give advice. Either way, vent about it because you will feel like a huge weight has been lifted and feel a tiny bit better.

2- Only good distractions: That means no social media. Just leave the phone alone and don’t text or call anyone and just take yourself away from it all. Having 24 hrs of your time, will centre you and help you refocus your mind. Have a day out or night in, binge-watch that show you’ve been wanting to watch, just spend a whole day just having positive distractions because it will help you mentally.

3- Sleeping: Get that full 8 hrs of sleep every day, because not only will it stop bags and dark circles under the eyes, it will help you get into a positive mindset. As you wouldn’t be spending all day in bed or all night on your phone. Maybe remove the tv from your room and put that phone across the room, having no screens to look at in the darkness you will fall asleep much quicker.

4- Scream, Laugh, Dance: Get out the karaoke, sing and dance like nobody is watching. It will get your blood pumping and you’ll distract your mind which everyone needs from time to time. Or maybe go to the top of a hill or a building with great acoustics and just scream. It may hurt your throat but you will feel just a bit better doing it.

5- Animals: All furry animals are great for everyone and for those with mental health problems. Petting, playing or whatever you may do with your little furry thing can help boost your mood. If you have a pet they’ll want to be with you and so that will make you feel good.

6- Write it: Buy yourself a journal and jot down thoughts about your day or just write anything that comes to mind. Maybe you can come back to it later and it will help you, or maybe write your feelings or bad experiences down and it will get it off your chest and it will remind you of better moments.
